Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
