As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
